British Public Gives its Verdict on Top 10 Benefits of ID Cards - But Preventing Terrorism Comes Way Down the List

22 April 2004
Stopping fraudsters tops list.
New independent research into David Blunkett's proposed ID card scheme shows, surprisingly, that most people believe the biggest benefit will be to put a stop to others fraudulently applying for money, goods and services in their name. Interestingly, prevention of terrorism is way down the list at number nine.
Commissioned by specialist IT consultancy, Detica, and conducted by MORI, the research asked 1000 British adults what they consider to be the most important potential benefits of a national ID Card scheme.
BRITISH ADULTS' TOP 10 BENEFITS OF ID CARDS
  1. To stop people fraudulently applying for services, goods or money in my name (78%).
  2. To stop fraudulent benefits claims (77%).
  3. To enable me to carry important medical information on my person in case of an accident - blood type, allergies, etc (77%).
  4. To make it easier for me to prove who I am - registering with a new GP or applying for a credit card, for example (75%).
  5. To prevent illegal immigration (71%).
  6. To make it easier to detect and arrest criminals (69%).
  7. To have just one card for ID, passport and driving licence (68%).
  8. To be able to prove your age (68%).
  9. To prevent terrorism (66%).
  10. To prevent black-market trade (66%).
Technical note: MORI interviewed a sample of 1,000 adults across Britain, aged 16+ between 18 and 23 March 2004, by telephone. Data have been weighted to match the known population profile.
